PVPA is a regional public charter school serving 400 students grades 7-12, from over 60 towns throughout Western Massachusetts. We seek to connect the creative process with critical thinking to inspire a love of learning. As a charter school, the work we do informs educational policy at local, state and national levels.
In order to receive credit for Independent studies in World Language at PVPA:
1) Independent Studies must be set up, documented and approved during the semester PRIOR to the start of the study.
2) Students must be enrolled in or auditing a course at an accredited institution or, in a tutoring situation, they must be working with a certified instructor of the language. Courses may also include accredited online distance courses.
3) Students must arrange for the study of three consecutive years of the same language.
4) The course content and curriculum must be comparable or exceed the content of the language courses at PVPA. All language learning must include written, oral and auditory components.
5) There are 60 hours of classroom time per semester at PVPA. Students who are doing an independent study must be meeting and working for the equivalent of 60 hours in order to receive credit for one semester.
6) Students who are taking courses through accredited institutions must show the course description and/or syllabus to the World Language Director at PVPA for approval prior to registration. Students who work with accredited tutors must request some form of documentation of course content and methodology from the instructor.
7) Upon completion of a semester of language study, independent study candidates who have worked with a tutor must show records of completed work. (i.e.- tests, writing assignments, worksheets, etc.). The tutor must also provide a summary of work completed and student performance so that the information can be conveyed in the PVPA narratives.
8) Students enrolled in a course will be graded and granted the appropriate credit by the instructor and must show evidence of course completion.
