The upper level humanities classes in language arts include intensive work in advanced writing genres. While teachers are free to pursue a variety of choice genres, the following six types of writing will appear in all 11/12 classes.

1. Note taking: on films, lectures, discussions, reading
2. Textual analysis:  use of direct textual evidence to interact with literature
3. Thesis driven analysis: an essay stemming from a statement
4. Creative writing: poetry, prose, dramatic scenes, song lyrics, etc
5. Timed essay tests: in-class assessments with the added pressure of time
6. Reflective essays: self-evaluation, pursuing open-ended questions, etc.
